A Massachusetts National Guardsman braved the flames to evacuate a home on fire in Weymouth on the Fourth of July.Sergeant First Class Adam Ayer had spent the Fourth of July in Boston, where he fired cannons on the Esplanade with the National Guard at the annual fireworks spectacular. After the show, he stopped in Weymouth for a cold drink and saw a house on fire across the street from the store. He said the whole back of the house was ablaze.“I just shot out of the parking lot, stopped in front of the driveway of the house, and I just went running toward the house,” Ayer said.Ayer called 911, but before firefighters arrived, he heard someone inside the house trying to escape.“I could see through the window. There were still people walking around inside the house. I told the dispatcher, ‘I’ve gotta go,’” Ayer said. “I hung up on her, and I ran into the house.”A man named Leo lives in the house, and he said he woke up to a man yelling in his living room. “I looked out my ba...Mets Notebook: Jose Quintana eyeing return after All-Star break

SAN DIEGO — The Mets might have a good problem on their hands following the All-Star break with the return of left-hander Jose Quintana. The rotation the club envisioned when the roster was put together this winter will finally debut, but that leaves the club with the question of what to do with six starters.Typically, playing time tends to work itself out. Injuries and ineffectiveness often dictate decisions like this, but the Mets currently have five healthy starters and with Quintana scheduled to make his final two rehab starts over the next week, he could make his 2023 debut as soon as July 18, when the Mets host the Chicago White Sox. However, that’s assuming that Quintana takes the place of David Peterson in the rotation. The Mets will discuss the pitching plans further when they see how Quintana comes through his next two rehab outings, though all indicators are that he will be able to join the rotation following the break.Peterson has pitched well since his retur...Nick Pivetta strikes out eight in relief as Red Sox top Athletics 7-3

Nick Pivetta may have been removed from the starting rotation in mid-May, but he’s proven invaluable as an innings-eater out of the bullpen, and Friday he delivered one of his strongest efforts yet.Pivetta threw five quality innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. He entered the game in the third following opener Brennan Bernardino, by which point the offense had already erupted for five runs en route to a decisive 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.Since moving to the bullpen Pivetta has posted a 2.79 ERA in 14 relief appearances, a marked improvement from his ugly 6.30 ERA over his first eight starts. He’s also steadily increased his workload since injuries decimated the rotation, going 3.1 innings last week against Miami, four innings Sunday in Toronto and now five innings Friday.Even with only three healthy starters available, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was adamant afterwards that they have no plans to reinsert Pivetta into the ro...Camp Pendleton Marine pleads not guilty in crash that killed 12-year-old boy

EAGLE PASS, Texas (AP) — Texas began rolling out what is set to become a new floating barrier on the Rio Grande on Friday in the latest escalation of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s multibillion-dollar effort to secure the U.S. border with Mexico, which already has included bussing migrants to liberal states and authorizing the National Guard to make arrests. But even before the huge, orange buoys were unloaded from the trailers that hauled them to the border city of Eagle Pass, there were concerns over this part of Abbott’s unprecedented challenge to the federal government’s authority over immigration enforcement. Migrant advocates voiced concerns about drowning risks and environmentalists questioned the impact on the river.Dozens of the large spherical buoys were stacked on the beds of four tractor trailers in a grassy city park near the river on Friday morning.Setting up the barriers could take up to two weeks, according to Lt.
