Later this month, when Jackson Holliday accrues a week’s worth of Triple-A plate appearances, he’ll join a club of some of MLB’s biggest names. Before they became stars in the big leagues, Bryce Harper, Ronald Acuña Jr., Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Ozzie Albies did what Holliday is about to do. Those four players are among a shortlist of prospects since 2006 to reach Triple-A by their age-19 season and total at least 20 plate appearances, according to FanGraphs.Holliday, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, is set to be promoted to Triple-A Norfolk to continue his remarkable rise through the Orioles’ minor league system. About 14 months ago, the shortstop was drafted with the first overall pick out of high school. This week, he’ll play at his fourth level of the season. In late July, Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias said Holliday reaching Triple-A would be “borderline unprecedented.” And the way Holliday achieved i...Div. 3-4 HS football: Trevor Foley catching on

MANSFIELD — It is not hard to find Trevor Foley when he is on the football field. He’s 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, and when he lines up for Mansfield at wide receiver, he draws a lot of attention. What is quite difficult, though, is being able to stop him. No one has done that yet, and the Hornets are hoping that continues in his senior season. With many taller receivers, running routes can be a bit awkward at the high school level. But Foley’s footwork and ability to change direction on a dime make him a tough cover.“Just practice, practicing over and over again, offseason, in season, after practice, before practice,” said Foley to explain his route-running prowess.“Usually, the tall, rangier kids that are that big, they’re good targets, but they’re not great getting in and out of cuts,” said Mansfield coach Mike Redding. “But he’s got great feet. His out cuts, he’s in and out and he’s got good length. You can run those...Div. 3-4 players to watch and other tidbits

STOCKHOLM (AP) — A trial started Tuesday in Stockholm of two executives of a Swedish oil exploration and production company accused of complicity in war crimes in Sudan 20 years ago by securing the company’s oil operations in the African nation.Prosecutors claim that Ian Lundin, former chairman of Lundin Oil, and Alex Schneiter, its former CEO, supported the Sudanese government of former dictator Omar al-Bashir. They said the two executives created “the necessary conditions for the subsidiary’s operations by conducting warfare in a way that entailed the Sudanese military and regime allied militia systematically attacking civilians or at least carrying out systematic attacks in violation of the principles of distinction and proportionality.”From 1983 to 2005, Sudan was torn apart by a civil war between the Muslim-dominated north and Christian south. A separate conflict in Darfur, the war-scarred region of western Sudan, began in 2003. Thousands of people were killed and nearly ...Homicide unit investigating after man shot outside home in Etobicoke

BERLIN (AP) — Austrian security officials said Tuesday they have broken up a suspected terror cell linked to the Islamic State group that consisted of nine young men and one woman. One suspect was detained. The investigations and interrogations carried out so far show that the suspects have an attitude that is between “fundamental Islamic” and “terrorist,” Austria’s domestic intelligence service DSN said in a statement. It did not reveal any further details about the suspects, saying it is still conducting further investigations. The suspects, who are aged between 15 and 23 and live near the city of Linz in northern Austria, allegedly “have been recruiting for the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) and its criminal activities for a long time,” the intelligence service said.“In addition, they planned to establish a mosque or prayer room under the sign of a decorative Taliban flag through missionary and recruitment activities,” the statement said. The identities of the suspects w...Turkish and Greek foreign ministers discuss troubled ties in a more friendly climate

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Greece’s foreign minister met with his Turkish counterpart on Tuesday for talks aimed at improving ties between the NATO allies that are at loggerheads over a string of decades-old disputes.Discussions between Greece’s Giorgos Gerapetritis and Turkey’s Hakan Fidan are taking place in a more friendly climate triggered by Greece sending assistance to Turkey following a devastating earthquake earlier this year, and Turkey offering condolences after a deadly train accident in Greece. The talks are expected to focus on a possible resumption of stalled high-level contacts aimed at reducing tensions between the two countries. The meeting comes as Ankara, in the throes of an economic downturn, is seeking a reset of its often-troubled relations with Western nations. It follows a rare meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Vilnius in July. The two neighbors disagree over territorial cl...Severe rainstorm triggers flooding in central Greece, 1 man dies.
