CHULA VISTA, Calif. – A group of East County residents made the trip to the South Bay Wednesday evening to fight for the reopening of Loveland Reservoir. It’s a topic they’ve been raising concern about for several months now.“We’re working with our insurance to make sure there’s no liability for the agency, so we will be looking at reopening the trail probably in the next few weeks,” said Carlos Quintero, General Manager at Sweetwater Authority.Community members from Alpine and the surrounding area near the Loveland Reservoir finally got the first glimmer of hope as to when the reservoir might reopen.Recreation has been cut off since early this year, but residents were devastated when Loveland was first drained, killing off the fish in November 2022.“When you destroy an ecosystem like that, it does not come back. You have to rebuild it,” David Thomas said.According to Sweetwater Authority, the action was taken during drought conditions to provide drinking water and other water needs...Anti-migration operation on French African island of Mayotte stirs tensions, exposes inequalities

It is also laying bare entrenched poverty among both communities, tensions over the island’s status — and deep inequalities between Mayotte and the rest of France. While Mayotte is a part of France, Comoros — 100 kilometers (60 miles) to the northwest across a strait in the Indian Ocean — was also once a French colony but has been independent since 1975. Mayotte is by far the poorest corner of France, but its average annual income of around $3,500 is still more than double that in Comoros. This has created a powerful pull.“How can they imagine for a second that (the ope...Latest news
